Informatics Basics is a training series adapted from webinars delivered to the 2017-2018 Applied Informatics Team Training program. The objective of the series was to describe basic terminology and concepts for public health informatics and foster dialogue among participating jurisdictions. The presenter and facilitator for each lesson was Kelley Chester, DrPH, MPH of C3 Informatics.

Key Concepts and Terminology in Public Health Informatics

By the end of the lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Define public health informatics
  • Discuss the value proposition for public health informatics
  • Define business process analysis
  • Describe the role of business process analysis in public health informatics
  • Describe an informatics-savvy organization
  • Describe the role of standards relevant to informatics projects and public health information systems
  • Discuss contemporary topics in public health informatics, such as Meaningful Use, electronic lab reporting, and electronic case reporting

Data Management for Public Health

By the end of the lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Define data management
  • Discuss the essential concepts of data management
  • Define the data management framework
  • Discuss data governance and its relationship to data management
  • Describe data warehousing tools and technique

Evaluation for Public Health Informatics

By the end of the lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and timing of evaluation in the context of public health informatics
  • Discuss the difference between formative and summative evaluation
  • Define models that guide Public Health Informaticians regarding what to evaluate
  • Describe a framework and strategy for evaluating public health information systems
  • Describe the steps for conducting an evaluation utilizing an existing evaluation framework

Communicating the Value of Public Health Informatics

By the end of the lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Describe basic principles for effective communication
  • Define informatics effectively to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Describe how informatics can assist in addressing public health problems
  • Utilize talking points or an elevator speech to communicate value of informatics
  • Apply communications principles for engaging stakeholders involved in informatics projects
